David Small began his singing career in 1981 the summer after his junior year of college. In following four and a half decades he has amassed performances of over 90 different opera roles in over 80 different operas, nearly all of the standard oratorio repertoire, and dozens of solo recitals (including 13 full performances of Schubert's Winterreise) and many orchestral appearances. His work has taken him to Italy, German, France, The Czech Republic, China, Mexico, and (so far) 33 of the 50 states. He has been a leading artist with the Cincinnati Opera, Austin Opera, Opera Santa Barbara, Chicago Opera Theater, Sarasota Opera, Sacramento Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Dayton Opera, Nevada Opera, Opera Delaware, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Mobile Opera, Utah Opera, Madison Opera, Fresno Opera, Bar Harbor Music Festival, Virginia Arts Festival, Pensacola Opera, Teatro Lyrica d'Europa, New Jersey State Opera, Pamiro Opera, Kentucky Opera, ElPaso Opera, and Odyssey Opera.

He has been featured soloist with The Cincinnati May Festival Orchestra, Austin Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Haifa Symphony (Israel), Prague Chamber Orchestra, Saint Louis symphony, Dallas Wind Symphony, Toledo Symphony, Lansing Symphony, Victoria Bach Festival, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Bucks County Symphony, Austin Ballet, and the Brookline Symphony. He has collaborated in recitals with pianists,Jean Anderson, Anton Nel, Kathy Kelly, Claude Cymemrna, Dr Robert Larsen, Steve Wogamon, Joachim Renihuber, John Novacek, Ruslan Ramazanov, Kelly Kuo, Geoffrey Kahane, Rick Rowley, Brett Hogdon, and Anne Epperson. His extensive art song experience includes nearly all of the major song cycles including, to date, 13 full performances of Schubert's Winterreise.

David earned a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from The DePauw University School of Music where he studied with Thomas Fitzpatrick, protege of the great American baritone Mack Harrell. He then earned an Artist Diploma in Opera and a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinati's College-Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of the great Italian Metropolitan Opera basso Italo Tajo. He currently serves on the voice faculty of the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where he teaches classical singing, two voice performance seminars, and a class of his own creation called The Mindful Performer. He adores living in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, with colalborative pianist and vocal coach Jean Anderson and there loveably insane dog Mocha.
